“The top of the hit parade would look very different if teenyboppers were exposed to heroin. It would weed a lot of them out. I don’t think Justin Bieber could handle [Pink Floyd guitarist] Syd Barrett’s habit. A lot of people, in their journey to rehab, overdose, and then, perhaps, we would be spared their awful music. It’s Darwinian. It’s the law of natural selection.” – Russell Brand to Rolling Stone

It might be a hard quote to take seriously, but think about it (especially those of you in or past your twenties): who are your favorite singers? And if they are under the age of twenty (and undoubtedly have not experienced love, death or addiction), who writes their music? Are these famous (pre-)teens getting famous for their actual talent or entirely based on some brilliant marketing? I’m not for sending all young talent off to shoot-up in Hollywood, but I honestly think the teen craze should be slowed or stopped.

(Not to mention this Justin Bieber thing totally baffles me. I mean, I could understand if he had an album called Leave It to Bieber, but seriously? Has anyone read any of his interviews? I daresay Megan Fox comes off as more coherent. That child needs to go back to school and keep his mouth shut until he hits puberty.)

Today’s update is the first of many interviews I hope Bee Sides Music will do. This one happens to be two birds with one stone cause it is also one of our primary goals to put the spotlight on local acts and help give them much needed attention. So without further adieu, my interview with South Florida hardcore act Jump the Gun:

Hey there guys. Let’s start with the introductions. Who are you and what is your role in the band?

Juan: Hey I’m Juan and I’m the vocalist.
Tito: I’m Tito, I playz the guitarz.
TJ: I’m TJ the drummer, doodle doo doodle doo.
*Eric: I’m Eric, and I have diabetes, but I play guitar.
Jon: And I’m Jon, I slappa da bass.

Nice. Well then, how did a diverse bunch of guys such as yourselves meet?

Juan: Tito, TJ, and I were in a band previously to Jump The Gun, that eventually we kept going through members until we just found our two newest boys Jon and Eric about a month ago. So pretty much we met through a mutual friend who tried to start a band but we were the only ones who stuck around.

How long have all of you been playing your instruments?

TJ: I’ve been playing for three years-ish.
Tito: I’ve been playing guitar for almost seven years.
Jon: I’ve been playing bass for six years.
Eric: eh, i’ve been, eh, derr, playing, for like, eh.

What inspired the name Jump the Gun?

Juan: We were yelling at our old guitarist about not taking it personal when someone disses our music, and we told him not to “jump the gun.” At his last show, we decided 10 minutes before we went on to change our name, and so yeah.

What genre(s) would you consider yourselves, or are you not a fan of labels?

Juan: We’re not really fans of labels, but honestly we just like to make heavy and sometimes fast music that we enjoy to play. I don’t think you can really label us, we’re all over the place.

Why are you guys making music?

Juan: Eric is in it for the ladies, but as of now his play count is of zero. For the rest of us we really do it to try and impact people with our music, spread a word of hope, hopefully they enjoy it. And we like to jump around on stage and yell.

So how does songwriting work? Do you all work on a song as a team or have a primary song writer?

Juan: Pretty much Tito writes most a song. TJ makes the beats, and then we pretty much fill in the rest as a band.

Hypothetically, if you could share the stage with any band/singer, who would it be and why?

Juan: I think collectively we would all die to play with MyChildren MyBride, those guys have been a big inspiration for us and their live set is so intense.

And individually?

Tito: Minus The Bear
Jon: Senses Fail and Stick To Your Guns
Juan: Burden Of A Day
TJ: Change Today
Eric: Well, I kinda like all time low.

Some musicians state that where they’re from has shaped them as an artist. How has South Florida contributed to who you are as a band as a whole, and your individual growth as an artist?

Tito: its definitely given me something to rebel against, because the music here is all the same and so playing something different is what I always try to do.
Juan: and honestly the scene down here is not that good at all, so just fighting that has been a factor to our growth as a band.

Who are the primary influences for Jump the Gun?

Juan: Maylene and the Sons of Disaster, Stick To Your Guns, Haste the Day, August Burns Red, The Chariot, Stray From the Path, After the Burial, Underoath, and Periphery

Who do you cite as your personal influences (not those of Jump the Gun)?

Jon: The black guy from reading rainbow.
Tito: The Dallas’, Dallas Taylor (from maylene and the sons of disaster) and Dallas Green (from Alexisonfire).
Juan: Ultimately my faith. It is the concept of all my lyrics.
TJ: Derek Roddy and the old drummer of Haste the Day.
Eric: Since I was a boy, my biggest influence has been Pee Wee Herman.

What’s the strangest thing that’s ever happened to you at a concert?

Juan: well Tito always has to freakin’ tune, and so I always have to bring out stupid jokes. So I brought out a feminist joke “whats the difference between a battery and a woman? A battery has a positive side.” As soon as I finished saying that, I felt the girl standing in the front row spit her drink at me. Not so nice. Later on we found out she was a lesbian. So that explains it.

What do you think makes your band worthy of media attention? In other words, what sets you apart from everyone else?

We are trying to be different than everyone else, and that’s what sets us apart. We play what we like and purposefully play any genre or style.

No band is immune to internal conflict. Sometimes it’s enough to tear the band apart. How do you and your band mates keep the conflict from breaking you guys up?

Well that’s what broke up all our previous bands. But Tito, TJ, and I just stuck together and were straight up honest with each other. So now its just about saying what you think, everyone gets to share their opinion.

Some bands engage in a pre-show ritual to ensure a success performance. Do you have any pre-show rituals?

Juan: Other than blasting fist pumping music on the way to the venue, nothing really.

How about something a little different. If I got a hold of your iPod/Zune/Mp3 player what do you think would be the most embarrassing thing I’d find?

TJ: Paramore, and J-Pop
Jon: I don’t find any music on my ipod embarrassing. If I listen to it its because I like it
Juan: The most embarrassing thing would be our first recording. That’s on there.
Tito: I have a song by Asia called In The Heat Of The Moment. Eric: well I don’t know if its embarrassing, but I own the entire soundtrack from Hairspray, its so good!

Some bands use their success to promote a particular agenda, like animal rights/welfare or raising money for impoverished areas. If Jump The Gun had to do a benefit concert for an issue, what would it be and why?

Well we bring something called Rice Bowls to our shows since around last month. What it does is hold change that is sent to poor kids in different parts of the world. They make around 10 cents a day, and we can probably collect enough change to feed them for a month in one little rice bowl. So bring your change to our shows!

Let’s play another game of pretend. You are granted the power to go back in time and alter Hollywood history so one of your songs could be featured on a soundtrack. What song is it, what movie would your song be featured in, and why?

After thinking deeply about it, we would put our song “I’ll be Famous When I’m Dead” in Fight Club. Bam!

For now what are you next big plans for Jump the Gun?

We have two new members, so we’re planning on expanding our sound and making our set sound beastly. Also we’re just going to be playing a whole bunch of shows this summer and we are also hoping to go into the studio and spend a buttload of money so we can get a legit song or two out. Oh, and on the side finding a cure diabetes. No biggie.

*Eric was not present during the interview, his answers were based upon the bands best predictions and judgements. Or lack there of.

Earlier this week Arizona melodic rock sextet Lydia announced that following the bands tour in July will be calling it quits. Via their myspace page:

I am anxious to say this, in that I do not like disappointing anyone. But I do need to get this off my chest. The new music that is set to come out this July 2010, under the name Lydia, is going to be the last recordings ever put out by the band. We are very grateful to have been able to put out as much music as we have and to reach so many people. I assure you this is not something I’ve decided over a few months, but more so in the past year. This has been something I’ve been thinking about for quite some time now and it’s just the right place and time for me to move on to other things and projects. I know Steve and myself have really enjoyed performing for all the people that have come out to a show over the last several years. And I can’t even begin to explain all the amazing people I’ve met while being a gypsy traveling around the country, unbelievable.

This decision has nothing at ALL to do with a lack of output from the band. I can honestly say the new Lydia material coming out in July is the best music I’ve ever had the opportunity and privilege to release. This release IS the best music the band has or will ever put out.

One last thing. Lydia has amazing fans. I can’t even begin to count how many times I’ve seen Lydia artwork and lyrics tattooed all over you guys. So I thought it would only be right to do one last goodbye/farewell tour along with the new music coming out. For how much you ladies and gent’s have and will support us it’s really the only thing to do. It will be a FULL US tour, and if it doesn’t come to your city it will surely come to a city near by. The dates will start this summer on JULY 20th and go into late August. The exact dates will be up in the coming weeks.

So we will see you ONE last time with new music in both our hands. The very last Lydia music being released will come to you in early JULY, and the very last tour will be at your door step in JULY/AUG.

I can’t even explain how much fun I’ve had while performing in all of your cities. And calling YOUR city home for the night. I am grateful to have met every one of you wonderful people. You truly have affected my life in ways you will never know.

Thank you.

Until we meet again..
Leighton

Tour dates plus a new song can be found on the bands msypace.

Young The Giant

If you’ve ever experienced that nagging feeling that you might already know someone you’re being introduced to, you have experienced listening to Young the Giant live for the first time. As the opening band, the California-based act had to deal with a much smaller (less enthused) crowd than any later band, and they did a great job handling themselves on stage. Young the Giant gave the crowd a slightly more punk version of their album, Shake My Hand (released during the band’s previous name, “The Jakes”), with a few pieces of new material and an energetic stage performance. The show would

Young the Giant shimmies about the stage; the maracas were actually a pretty sweet addition.

only have been more impressive if we hadn’t spent a few minutes trying to figure out why the band sounded so damn familiar live, which we didn’t figure out until ‘Garands At Normandie’: live, Young the Giant sounds an awful lot like The Strokes mashed into The Killers in some sort of fantastic indie rock hybrid, circa 2005. If you’re a fan of the vocal stylings and vintage perspective of Julian Casablancas, as well as the synth-pop touches brought brought by The Killers, you’ll definitely get a kick out of seeing Young the Giant live. You can check this band out at their website (www.youngthegiant.com) for upcoming tour dates and new album information.

Everest

It isn’t really a good sign when the lead singer of a band is visibly wasted before they even reach the mic; but then, part of Everest’s schtick seems to be sleepy, drugged-out rock. While Everest’s own MySpace states:

“Often descriptions of bands fall into the equation of ‘this well known group plus this other established act plus a few adjectives.’ But some bands defy this shorthand, offering something so pure & true that its roots aren’t apparent.”

it became pretty apparent two songs in that the band is very much like Wilco meeting My Morning Jacket on a particularly good day. I wouldn’t give them high marks for their performance, but, in their defense, it was their album-release day and they were fed a continuous diet of rum by our friends, Minus The Bear. While the show wasn’t anything to write home about, their new album, On Approach is a really good, somewhat quiet album you could listen to on a relaxing night in. Unfortunately, the album alone isn’t enough to save the performance; I wouldn’t pay to see Everest on a headlining tour.

Minus The Bear

Forget it if you’ve read it: Minus the Bear does NOT suck live. This was my second time seeing the band in concert, and I feel completely confident in saying this. That said, you should definitely be prepared to dance when you arrive, and some of the crowd at this venue seemed like they needed a few weeks off the steroids before they would even be physically capable of dancing. The band was, as ever, charming between songs (reinforcing rules such as, “if you get bumped, move on because fighting is stupid” and “take care of your neighbors in the pit”) and high energy throughout the set. The Seattle-based indie rock act focused on their newest release, Omni, but didn’t forget their old fans, playing songs like ‘Fine + 2 Pts.’, ‘Absinthe Honey at The Fly Honey Warehouse ‘ and ‘Drilling’. I’d avoid the show if you’re adverse to dancing in public or, like one poor guy, experience light-induced seizures (a special thanks to anyone reading this who helped carry him out of the pit – you guys are seriously awesome), but otherwise, buy a ticket and get in line for a really fun show.
